I did this week's extra reading on serpents and dragons! I have definitely heard and read about these awesome creatures all throughout popular media. Shows, movies, books, etc. are all great examples of these mythical animals in today's culture.
In this CrashCourse, it talked about the two animals, their origin of sorts, and how they are portrayed across cultures. I had no idea that certain myths had them beginning as snakes, then evolving later into a bull-headed, winged, dragon with eagles' feet. And then, of course, that was later tied to that same myth's account for humankind's creation. So, yeah, I guess the two were connected in this way. I am giving a poor description; the actual video explains this much more gracefully.
One interesting tidbit that caught my attention was that dragons were/are fastidious! Especially with how they are depicted in The Hobbit films, lying on mounds of gold and treasure, I wouldn't think dragons to be neat and tidy. I suppose this is just another difference of portrayal across cultures. But nonetheless, it went further and mentioned that the way to irritate dragons and cause them to fly around haphazardly was to put tiger bones near them! I was surprised to learn that such a large, intimidating animal would be perturbed by mere tiger bones.
